Here we have a very special Gibson Doves in Flight acoustic guitar. This particular example features a never-before-seen Viper Blue finish! Good luck finding another one of these.

The Doves in Flight might just be the best guitar Ren Ferguson ever designed for Gibson. It’s just a special guitar. It has just the right balance between ornate beauty and simplicity. It’s highly decorative yet very classy. A top-notch design.

The body utilizes beautifully flamed maple. The guitar also features a Sitka spruce top and a flamed maple neck. All of the woods used here are top quality and beautiful!

This guitar isn’t just for showboating. Its tone is as great as any dreadnought out there! Gibson builds these so their tone matches their gorgeous looks. Plenty of volume, loads of sustain, and lots of clarity. You’ll love to play this one!

Gibson SJ-200 Custom Vine Brazilian Rosewood, Ren Ferguson! J-200

Price: $24,999

This guitar is one of my personal favorites I’ve ever owned. I’m a huge Ren Ferguson fan, and this shows some of his finest work. It is a one-of-a-kind custom SJ-200 hand-built by Ferguson himself. The guitar features a custom vine inlay, as well as Brazilian rosewood back and sides. It doesn’t get much cooler than that.

The guitar was built in 1994 as part of Gibson’s 100th anniversary celebration. Some people would refer to these guitars as “Master Museum” guitars. Though, technically that series was begun in 1998. The quality of this guitar is consistent with the Master Museum collection.

I once asked Ren why his guitars sound so much better than the standard Gibson guitars. I was thinking he would teach me about some of the building techniques he has learned over the years. His response, however, was simply “I pick wood that already knows how to sing.” I don’t know how he does it, but his guitars truly are the best sounding guitars I’ve ever played.

I don’t have to teach you about how rare Brazilian rosewood guitars are now days. Just imagine the collectability and value this guitar will hold a few years down the road. Like the “holy grail” Gibson guitars of past decades, this guitar, along with its sisters, will be the sought-after guitars of the future. Collectors will seek long and hard to find these Gibsons, and they won’t find many. They’ll find even fewer in Brazilian rosewood.

The tone of this guitar is simply amazing. It has a huge tonal body and response. The bass is as deep as a well. Because of the tone, this would be a special guitar even if it were ugly. Fortunately, though, it is not 🙂

Another unique aspect of this guitar is the individual saddles. These saddles are consistent with the original saddles built for the first ever SJ-200s (1938-1942). Ren added them to this guitar to commemorate some of the history behind the SJ-200.

The condition of this guitar is excellent. It has been minimally played during its lifetime, but shows very little signs of wear. It has no dings, dents, or scratches in the body. The body shows minor finish checking, consistent with its age. One corner of the headstock has been lightly touched against a surface and some finish was removed. There is no damage in the wood. The corner can be seen in the photo of the back of the headstock.

Included with the guitar is the original hardshell case.

2013 Gibson Hummingbird Custom Quilt Acoustic Guitar!

Price: $5,749

This is a very special ‘Bird, indeed. It is one of a limited run of 20 guitars Gibson produced. All of them but mine have been sold. It isn’t very often you see a guitar like this coming from Gibson. This is a truly special guitar!

What we have here is a AAA-grade Sitka spruce top over AAAAA-grade quilted maple back and sides. The maple on this guitar is stunning. It’s some of the best quilted maple I’ve ever seen on a guitar! It’s not often that you find quilted maple which is bookmatched as well as this one. I love it.

The sunburst finish found on this guitar is very unique. There aren’t many Hummingbirds out there finished like this. I love it!

The fingerboard, headstock, and pickguard are all adorned with beautiful hummingbird and flower pearl inlays. These are a very classy touch. They really shine in the light and give the guitar a special presence in a room or on a stage. The tuners are hand-carved and really add to the ornate nature of this guitar. No expense was spared here.

This guitar is brand new and has never been owned. It has never even been played aside from a few strums by me to check the action and tone. As you can imagine, the tone from this Hummingbird is supreme. I’d like to think that the luthiers building these custom guitars spend a little more time on them, and the quality result really reflects this. What an awesome piece.

The guitar has been equipped from the factory with an active L.R. Baggs electronics system. It’s a great sounding system!

Included with the guitar is the certificate of authenticity, the original hardshell case, and all case candy.

First Ever Gibson Monarch SJ-200 Acoustic Guitar! J-200 J-250 SJ-250

 Price: $49,999

This is one of the coolest Gibson guitars on the planet. It is Serial Number 1 of the Gibson Monarch collection. This guitar was hand-built by Ren Ferguson and John Walker in the Gibson Custom Shop in 1994. Gibson told Ren to design and build a guitar that would trump everything else on the market, regardless of price range. This is what he came up with. Since then, Gibson has built other Monarchs modeled after this one, but none compares to this one in craftsmanship, uniqueness, or cool factor. This is the only Monarch that was actually built by Ren Ferguson. The others were production-line models.

Ever since its introduction in 1938 (prototype in 1937), the Gibson SJ-200 has been marketed as “The King of the Flattops.” When the Monarch was introduced into the Gibson lineup, it was marketed as the King of Kings (hence, the name Monarch). As the first Monarch ever, this guitar is not only the King of all Monarchs, but all J-200s the world over.

The obvious standout feature on this guitar is the inlayed King’s Crown on the headstock. This King’s Crown is different from the ones on all other Monarchs. The pearl-and-abalone inlays are more intricate and ornate, and the crown also features actual precious gems set into the crown. This includes real rubies, an emerald, sapphires, and amethysts. The dot for the “i” in the Gibson logo is a real diamond. Ren Ferguson said that these stones are of the highest quality. The craftsmanship here is unreal. None of the other Monarchs have these features. The crowns on the others are simple in comparison. You won’t find another guitar like this anywhere.

As you can see, the back of the headstock features the serial number inlayed in pearl. The “No. 1” beneath the serial number identifies this one as the first of all Monarchs. The back of the Monarch headstock is, in my opinion, the most beautiful back of any headstock Gibson has ever built.

The tuners are three-dimensional hand-carved pearl crowns with inlayed amethyst stones. They are one-of-a-kind and completely unique to Serial Number 1. None of the other Monarchs have these tuners.

The guitar features an ebony fretboard inlayed with extremely ornate crowns at each fret-marker. These crowns are much more ornate than the ones on the standard Monarch.

The back and sides of this guitar are Brazilian rosewood. I’m sure I don’t need to explain the rarity of Brazilian rosewood. You just don’t find very many Gibson guitars with Brazilian back and sides.

As you can imagine, the tone of this guitar is superb. Ren Ferguson is one of the world’s best luthiers. He does not spare any expense when building guitars, and this one is no exception. He would never build a guitar this fancy without making sure the tone matched the looks. It sounds phenomenal! The sheer volume of the this guitar is legendary. The bass response is enough to shake the legs off the chair you happen to be sitting on. It is simply amazing.

As you can see in the photos, Ren Ferguson and John Walker signed the label inside the guitar.

This guitar has been well-cared for during its life. It has been played lightly and does show minor signs of use. The guitar has one small repaired top crack. The repair job was done by The Music Villa in Bozeman, Montana. Ren Ferguson himself actually shops at this store frequently. He inspected the guitar himself during the repair process. The repair is completely invisible when viewed from straight on. It is only visible (still very hard to see) when viewed from the bass side (the side where the crack is). The repair is seamless, meaning nothing can be felt when running your finger over the crack. If you were presenting this guitar to a friend, and you didn’t tell them it had a repaired crack, they would never notice it.

In the long run, a well-repaired crack does little, or nothing, to hurt the value of a guitar like this. How many prewar Martin D-45s have you seen without at least one repaired crack? Cracks happen. Eventually every guitar in the world will sustain at least one. All Stradivarius violins have repaired cracks.

This guitar is obviously not for the casual collector. This guitar is for someone who has a deep passion for Gibson and wants a guitar which has historical significance with the company. Just imagine what Ren Ferguson’s guitars will be worth someday down the road. To have the first Monarch, and the only one ever built by him, is quite a special thing. This guitar will be the stuff of legend someday.

Included is the original hardshell case.

Gibson SJ-200 Prototype Ron Wood Acoustic Guitar! J-200

Price: $9,999

Here we have the prototype Gibson Ron Wood J-200! Gibson made a deal with Ron Wood (guitarist for The Rolling Stones) to produce a guitar based upon his specifications (usually referred to as a “signature” guitar). Ron provided Gibson with his personal preferences and Gibson set out to build the guitar that would suit him best. This is what they came up with.

This particular guitar is actually the very first one of these Gibson built. They presented this prototype to Ron for him to test out and look at to make sure everything was pleasing to him. He approved and the model was moved into production. Each one in the series is numbered on the label inside the soundhole. This one is simply labeled “Prototype”, as you can see in the photo of the label.

Have you ever seen a Gibson prototype for sale? I didn’t think so. Gibson rarely sells its prototypes. I bought this one from the original retailer, who convinced Gibson to sell it to him back in the 90’s. He held on to it for years and recently sold it to me. This is an extremely rare guitar.

Most of these Ron Wood J-200s have double pickguards attached to them. The pick guards were never installed on this one, maybe because they hadn’t been designed yet. Most people don’t like these pickguards. I think they are unattractive, myself. This one, without them, looks much better to me.

Some of the Ron Wood J-200s have ebony fretboards, while others have rosewood. This one has a jet-black ebony fretboard, and a jet-black ebony bridge – also a great feature.

The maple on this guitar is stunning! Check out that flamed-maple neck! That’s some of the best figured maple you will find! The back and sides also have great flamed-maple.

The flame inlays are a unique feature to Ron’s J-200. I’ve never seen them on any other J-200 out there. I love them.

This guitar is in flawless condition. Aside from Ron Wood’s testing, this guitar is unplayed. The original retailer stored the guitar away and never really intended to play it or sell it. The guitar has no blemishes from play wear. The finish shows some signs of age – some finish separation at the bridge, very minor finish checking in the body, finish aging near the binding of the headstock – standard stuff for the age of the guitar. It is well-preserved because it hasn’t been played since Ron had it.

Included with the guitar is the original hardshell case and all original paperwork.

2004 Gibson J-45 Custom Vine Acoustic Guitar!

Price: $4,499

Here is a rare 2004 Gibson J-45 Custom Vine in sunburst finish!

Gibson makes a few guitars which stand above the rest – this is one of those guitars. The abalone and pearl vine inlay is stunning! The inlay is done into a jet-black ebony fretboard. As you know, ebony fretboards are an increasing rarity at Gibson, since they aren’t currently producing any guitars with ebony boards. They are all rosewood.

The back and sides of the guitar are AAA-grade Indian rosewood and gorgeous! They give the guitar a deep and full-bodied tone (I did play the guitar momentarily to ensure the action and tone).

The top of the guitar is made from AAA-grade Sitka spruce.

The guitar also features an abalone rosette and abalone purfling, similar to the Gibson Doves in Flight – another masterpiece.

This guitar has been used, but is in good condition. It shows minor signs of use, and a few nicks here and there. There are no major issues with the guitar. It has been well taken care of, and well used. It’s not quite for the collector out there, more for the player.

The case isn’t in great condition. It is structurally sound, but has quite a bit of scuffing. The handle has been reattached using wire, but it is solid and functions just fine.

Included is the original hardshell case and all case candy. The guitar even includes the original hangtags.

Additional shipping options are available upon request for international buyers.

(SOLD!) 2001 Gibson Firebird Custom Acoustic Guitar!

Price: SOLD!

Here we have a 2001 Gibson Custom Firebird acoustic guitar. You don’t see these very often!

These guitars were built to commemorate a wild fire which in 2001 threatened the Gibson Montana factory, where the Gibson acoustics are built.

This guitar is in excellent condition. There are no major flaws of note. It has very minor play wear and few marks here and there, but no dings, dents, or scratches.

To me, there are two things which set this guitar above almost all other dreadnoughts Gibson is building: First, the inlay on the front of the headstock. The abalone and pearl firebird inlay is one of the most beautiful headstock inlays Gibson has ever produced. It is stunning. Second, the figured maple used on this guitar is absolutely ridiculous. Look at it! The quilted back and sides are as good as any you will find. Try to find a guitar with better maple! The neck maple is also extremely flamed and gorgeous. You just don’t find wood like this very often on guitars.

The guitar features an ebony fretboard. If you look at the new guitars being produced by Gibson, they all have rosewood fretboards. That’s because Gibson isn’t using ebony to build fretboards anymore. If you’re like me, a rosewood fretboard just isn’t good enough on a custom acoustic. The ebony on this guitar is jet black and tight-grained.

Here are a few of my thoughts regarding the difference between guitars built by the Gibson Custom Shop, as opposed to the non-Custom Shop Gibson guitars:

-The Custom Shop has a much higher standard of quality than Gibson USA does. The finish flaws usually found on Gibson USA models are nearly non-existent on the Custom Shop models. The luthiers at the Custom Shop have more experience.-The Custom Shop uses better cuts of wood, such as the maple and ebony cuts used for this guitar. Even the current J-200 Custom has a rosewood fretboard, as opposed to the ebony of this Firebird Custom acoustic. The woods used to build Gibson USA guitars are inferior – trust me, I’ve owned them.

-This last item is an observation of mine, but I haven’t technically verified it: It seems to me that the Gibson Custom Shop braces its guitars lighter than Gibson USA does, giving Custom Shop Guitars a better tone. This could be because Gibson knows that the people buying Custom Shop guitars have more knowledge about guitars and are less likely to overload the top. When people overload the top, Gibson ends up paying for warranty repairs, leading them to brace the guitars slightly heavier to prevent that from happening. My Custom Shop guitars have all been lighter than my Gibson USA guitars.

Included with this guitar is the original hardshell case.

(SOLD!) Gibson 75th Anniversary 1930’s SJ-200 Limited Edition J-200 Acoustic Guitar

Price: SOLD!

Here we have a very special guitar. This is a 1930’s Gibson SJ-200 Reissue. The SJ-200 was first introduced (aside from the prototype) in 1938. This reissue was designed to a close (not quite exact) replica of the first SJ-200’s. This is freaking cool!

In addition to the awesome features of this guitar, Charlie Daniels himself has autographed the body. Charlie is a music legend (The Devil Went Down to Georgia), which adds to the collectability of this guitar. I’m certain the autograph could be removed if the owner, for some reason, wished it to be.

This guitar has never been owned. It is brand new and unplayed, therefore it is in perfect condition!

There a few things about this guitar which particularly stand out to me. The first is the Adirondack spruce top. Gibson does not produce very many guitars with Adirondack. This wood has extremely good tonal qualities and is highly-regarded as one of the best (if not the best) woods for guitar tops. Another standout feature of this guitar is the use of hide glue in its construction. Many people believe hide glue impedes less on the tone of a guitar than the alternative glues most guitars are constructed with. These two things, combined with the rest of the features, make this guitar a great instrument!

Included with the guitar is the original hardshell case. This case was made for Gibson by TKL. It is the highest quality case I have ever seen with a Gibson acoustic. I’ve owned many Gibson custom guitars, even some Ren Ferguson Master Museums, and none have had a nicer case than this.

Also included is the original paperwork, as shown in the photos.

(SOLD!) Gibson Elvis Presley King Of Rock J-200, #20, Acoustic Guitar! SJ-200

Price: SOLD!

Here we have serial number 20 of 250 in the Gibson Elvis King of Rock J-200 series. This is the lowest serial number I have ever seen of this collection. Typically, the collectability (and price) of these items is based quite heavily on which serial number the guitar has. The first 50 of a collection are regarded as the prime, while the top 20 are usually hoarded by collectors. This is a rarity, indeed!

This guitar features very unique inlays. There are mother-of-pearl Elvis-style crowns on the headstock, fretboard, and the pickguard! The bridge is completely unique to the Elvis J-200. This guitar has a very classy look.

The top of the guitar is Sitka spruce, while the back and sides are maple. The fretboard is ebony, very fitting for the black theme of this guitar.

The value of this guitar will continue to rise with time, especially considering its low serial number. There won’t be any more of these produced, either.

Gibson produced this guitar in 1996. The guitar is in excellent condition. It has been played lightly, but shows very little signs of wear. The finish has the typical finish checking for the age of the guitar. The body of the guitar has no dings, dents, or scratches. It has been well-cared for, indeed.

Included with the guitar is the original hardshell case.
